Talk on Mongolia by Mr Daniels
9th December 2009
Mr Daniels gave a talk on Mongolia which was very well presented and illustrated with slides. The speaker is a retired dentist who went out to Mongolia with a research party comprising various specialists in other disciplines and from other parts of the world. His slides were fabulous and the final slide made a great impression. It was taken from the air and showed a huge deserted landscape in which the only sign of human habitation was one nomadic home (called a Yurt), made to seem tiny and insignificant by the massiveness of its surrounding panorama. Not another sign of civilisation in sight.
We were shown slides of the insides of more than one Yurt as the group travelled about: one thing which was pointed out as common to most Yurts, were tooth brushes hanging on the inside timber slats used to make the Yurts. It was explained that as many of the people are nomadic, and follow the seasonal pasture required for the grazing of their animals, the Yurts are very portable.
Our retired dentist presenter showed slides of himself carrying out several dentistry procedures during the trip in what appeared to be very remote places.
You have to wonder how they survive, but they do and the slides were of very smiling people.
One of the purposes of the trip was to find Snow Leopards and carry out some research. Some work on the subject was done, but sadly no sightings were made. To make up for this Mr. Daniels made a visit to Marwell Zoo where he took slides of their Snow Leopards.
