Open Gardens and BBQ

7th August 2010

This seems to become a more popular event as each year goes by.  The day started with members’ gardens in Soberton being open to other garden members.  5 gardens took part and they were all very interesting and quite different in character and design.  One has a very large pond, with very large fish, which alone is worth a very long linger.  The gardens varied in size from small to moderately big.  The smallest garden probably had the most plants and is one that opens for the Yellow Book.  Members were interested to see a garden that was the Old Droxford Railway Station and is in the process of reconstruction.  This has very good raised vegetable beds as well as good flower colour.

Then in the evening we gathered for the traditional BBQ at another Soberton garden.  You had to dodge the sheep when parking, as they seemed to think that food being delivered was for them.  I cannot say what the precise numbers were as some on the list could not come and others turned up on the day.  But it was definitely touching 90.  It had been raining for some of the afternoon when members were looking at the gardens, and there was a short flurry in the evening.  But we believed the weather forecasters and did not put up gazebos, and it was a fine evening.  As ever the food was very good, the meat cooked by men of the club and the salads prepared by lady committee members.  It is always a very happy social event in our programme.
